NORTH TORIES ON COLLISION COURSE OVER NEW NORTHUMBERLAND COUNCIL HQ
As Tory Hexham MP Guy Opperman and Conservative group leader Peter Jackson join forces to stop regeneration of Ashington, Labour hail high profile Tory donor and supporter Sir John Hall vocal support for scheme to continue ‘rebirth’ of Ashington
Conservative plans to halt the regeneration of Ashington have been branded as ‘mean, spiteful and hypocritical’ by the town’s councillors as a split emerged between high profile Tories in the North East over the issue.
Sir John Hall, a high profile donor and supporter of various Conservative politicians across the North East greeted plans to relocate the county council HQ to Ashington as ‘a bold decision’ that would ‘break the cycle of decline’ in the town but has now found himself on opposite sides to the county Conservative group led by Councillor Peter Jackson and Hexham MP Guy Opperman who have joined forces to demand that the county council ‘scraps plans to relocate the HQ’ from its current base in Morpeth.
Now Labour councillors in Ashington are calling for Northumberland Tories to ‘stop playing politics with the town’s future’.
Ashington County Councillor for Haydon ward in the town Brian Gallacher said
“It’s time for Hexham’s MP and the Tory group leader Peter Jackson to stop attacking Ashington and to follow the lead of their supporter and donor Sir John Hall and get behind a bold and visionary plan that will reverse the economic decline of the town. Sir John Hall knows when to leave politics at the door for the good of communities and it’s a pity his passion for economic change isn’t matched by Northumberland Tories. Residents of the town will rightly ask just what Guy Opperman and Peter Jackson have against Ashington and the South East. People have told me that Tory plans to derail investment in the Town are mean, spiteful and hypocritical and I can’t disagree with them”.
